Do You Need a Visa To Start a Business in the United Kingdom

Even after the BREXIT, as of now, European Nationals don’t have special visa requirements to start a business in the UK. This, however, doesn’t apply to Bulgaria and Romania, two countries that came into EU only in 2004. Anyway, we recommend you call us, depending on when you read this article, as some rules are set to be altered at some time. EU nationals might have to apply for a visa (they most probably will have to) as soon as the process of the United Kingdom leaving the EU is complete.

The Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa

In case you need a business visa, you will need to apply for the Tier 1 Entrepreneur Visa. This applies to both if you want to start a new company or invest in an already existing business in the UK. The requirements are strict and for the Tier 1 Entrepreneur visa, you will need to invest at least EUR 50,000 in an existing company or should be willing to invest the among in a new company. In case you already have investments, you can get the visa within a year before you apply for the visa.

You could also apply for the visa if you have at least EUR 200,000 in the investment funds. The money has to be yours or can be owned by a direct family member (spouse) or a sponsor. You will need to employ at least two British (or settled) workers in your business (full-time). Other requirements include basic English fluency, a clean police record, and a health checkup. Of course, you will also need to showcase your business plan. You must also verify that what you intend to do is viable and will help the United Kingdom economy in a positive way.

How Much Time Does it Take to Start a Business in the UK?

First, as we said you will need to apply for the visa, which will take at least 3 to 6 months. We generally start the business formation process afterwards and it might not take more than some few days.
